At one or another point in life, we all face the dilemma of choosing our career. It’s hard to choose something when we have no idea about what we want to become. And if you ask someone for career advice, you’re most likely to hear the phrase ‘Follow your passion’.
Some people are lucky, they realize where their interests lie and find ways to pursue a career in a field that complements their passion. Most people do not fit into this category. A lot of us are still clueless. Society has convinced us that we can only be happy if we find our passion. In any movie or book, you’ll find that the protagonist who is deeply disturbed by his/her career choice finally finds redemption and success when he pursues his true calling.
But what of the others? What of the rest of the population that hasn’t found their true calling? Why are they labeled as failures in life?
Media culture has led us to believe that passion is everything. But the truth is, it’s not. Sure, you need passion. Passion is what sets us apart from the mundane rituals of life. Passion is what gives you hope in times of despair. But the world doesn’t revolve around passion alone. There is much more to life than that.
Not everyone finds their passion. And there is nothing to fret about it. As human beings, we’re constantly evolving. And with this process of change, our interests are evolving too. It’s okay if you haven’t found your purpose. It’s okay if you haven’t found yourself yet.
Life is about the journey, not the destination. Maybe you’ll develop that passion on the road. Maybe you won’t. Always be open to discovering your own path and finding out what works best for you. You don’t have to follow the path that society has paved for you.
You may not always end up with the job you like. You might end up feeling isolated. In your heart, you’ll have this constant feeling that this is not where you belong. But do not give up. Along the way, there are so many skills you can acquire. So many new things you can learn. Most people stick to their passion because they’re naturally good at it. Because doing something you know and love is effortless.
But life is unpredictable, your passion isn’t going to favor you every time. At one point, you’ll reach a dead end. And when that happens, your passion isn’t going to hold up. Your perseverance, commitment, and hard work are what’s going to keep you from falling. The experiences you’ve had, the lessons you’ve learned, the growth you’ve achieved, these are the things that determine our success in the end.
If you’re still clueless about what you want to do, don’t beat yourself up for it. Life doesn’t work out at the same time for everyone. We’re all growing at different times and rates. Just trust the timing of the universe, have faith in yourself and wherever you are, always do your best.
